Introduce about Baba Is You

Baba Is You is a puzzle game that feels very different from typical logic games. From the very first levels, the game shows that it doesn’t follow the typical “push the barrel – clear the way – reach the finish line” path. Instead, all the rules are placed directly on the screen in the form of letter blocks, and players can directly move, break, or rearrange them.

After playing for a while, it’s easy to see that Baba Is You doesn’t force players to have quick reflexes or memorize complex actions. What the game requires is patience and a willingness to think differently. Some levels look simple at first glance, but the more you try, the more stuck you become, until you accept breaking free from familiar ways of thinking.

The graphics are minimalist, the characters look quirky, but don’t let that fool you. Beneath the surface is an incredibly clever puzzle system, where every small change in the rules can open up a completely new solution.

Changing the rules directly in the game

The most special thing about Baba Is You, and also what I both liked and… found mentally exhausting, is that the rules are not fixed. After playing for a while, I realized I no longer thought in terms of going from A to B. Instead, I started looking at the letter blocks. Initially, it looked very clear and logical. But then, just by shifting one block, everything changed completely.

There were levels where I stood still for quite a while, not because I didn’t know where to go, but because I was wondering, “Do I still need to be Baba?” That feeling arose because the game allows you to break the very definition of the character you’re controlling. When BABA is no longer YOU, my brain naturally had to shift direction. I no longer thought of it as playing a game, but as playing with language.

It throws you into a situation and then lets you figure it out yourself. Sometimes I found myself coming up with a very silly solution, but it turned out to be correct. And the feeling of “ah, so that’s it” came up quite strongly, because I had just broken a rule that I previously thought was immutable.

Level design forces players to think differently

In later levels, Baba Is You becomes frustrating in its own unique way. Not because the levels are longer, but because the solution is no longer on the surface. It’s easy to notice that many levels look extremely simple. Few objects. Few words. But the more I tried, the more stuck I became. There were times when I pushed and pulled the same thing over and over, then wondered what I was missing.

This feeling arises because the game deliberately leads players into a rut of thinking. If you’re used to “FLAG IS WIN,” the game will make you think of ways to win without using flags. Or if you’re used to “WALL IS STOP,” then you’ll have to make the wall… no longer a wall. At those times, I clearly see that I’m having to break old habits, accepting to try ideas that sound completely wrong.

In fact, during gameplay, there was a level I solved just by accidentally pushing a block of letters for fun. And that very moment made me realize this game isn’t meant to be rushed. It rewards curiosity, for daring to do things that seem illogical.

No pressure to fail

One thing I really like about Baba Is You is that the game almost never penalizes players for making mistakes. There are no limit on the number of moves. No point deductions. No annoying “Game Over” screens. After playing for a while, I realized I tried many things that seemed quite silly, like pushing blocks of letters randomly just to see what would happen. And the game allows that, very comfortably.

This feeling arises because every time you make a mistake, you just reset the level in an instant, and everything returns to its original state. There’s no interruption to your train of thought. No need to start over with a long section.

Thanks to this, I dared to try ideas that I would normally skip for fear of “wasting time.” Some levels I solved not because I came up with a complete plan, but because after a few random attempts, I suddenly saw a new connection between the blocks of letters.

Minimalist graphics but excellent for thinking

At first glance, the graphics of Baba Is You are quite simple, some might even find it a bit “crude.” The characters are small, the colors aren’t too vibrant, everything looks like it was drawn very sparingly. But after playing for a while, I understood why the game chose this style. If the graphics were more detailed, with more effects, I would have probably been confused long ago.

While thinking about how to solve a problem, my eyes were completely focused on the position of the blocks of letters and objects. There are no unnecessary distractions. This creates a very clear feeling that the game prioritizes thinking, not performance. The sound is also subtle, almost only serving to confirm the action. Sometimes I can play normally even with the sound off, because the important part is in the brain, not the ears.

Overall, Baba Is You is not the kind of game you play quickly or for light entertainment. This is a game that makes you pause, think slowly, and then question your own familiar way of thinking. The more you play, the clearer it becomes that the game doesn’t challenge reflexes, but challenges your thinking habits.
