Introduce about Coffee Talk

Coffee Talk is a visual novel game that is very different from many other games on the market: here you don’t fight, there are no classic puzzles, but you play as a barista – the owner of a coffee shop that opens at night in a fantastical version of Seattle, where creatures like elves, vampires, mermaids, and ordinary people come to the shop to chat and share their life stories.

Coffee Talk’s gameplay focuses on preparing warm drinks to order for customers and listening to them share stories about love, family, work stress, or small but very human things. Much of the experience involves sitting and listening to customers talk, brewing hot coffee or tea, sometimes trying latte art, or checking messages on your phone in the cafe.

What impressed me was the setting, which combined fantastical elements with everyday stories, allowing very real issues like confessions, emotions, and prejudices to be told through characters who aren’t always human.

Preparing drinks and listening

After playing for a while, I realized that brewing coffee in Coffee Talk wasn’t just for gameplay. Each drink I made was connected to the customer’s mood. Some people walked into the cafe with tired faces, saying a few short sentences; I had to guess what they needed – a strong black coffee, or a gentle warm cup of tea.

Sometimes, when I make the coffee right, they smile, and the conversation flows more naturally. Sometimes, when I make a mistake, no one scolds me, but the atmosphere becomes a little subdued, and I suddenly feel… guilty. That feeling arises because the game doesn’t treat coffee making as a fun mini-game, but as part of the story.

In reality, during the experience, I found myself paying more attention to the customers’ dialogue, trying to guess if they were sad, worried, or just wanted to be listened to. And the moment I placed the coffee cup on the table, watched them pick it up and drink, then continued telling their life stories, made me feel more like a friend than a game player.

Very realistic stories

The most noticeable thing about Coffee Talk is that it uses fantastical characters to tell very real stories. Elves, vampires, mermaids, werewolves… it sounds fantasy, but they talk about love, family, work, prejudice, and social pressure. After playing for a while, I completely forgot what kind of creatures they were; I just saw them as friends who came to the cafe every night.

Sometimes, when I was reading the dialogue, it felt like I was listening to an acquaintance confide in me in real life. Some lines were very short, but they made me pause and think for a moment. And I understood why that feeling arose: because the game doesn’t try to make the story grand; it lets everything unfold slowly, naturally, and very realistically. In later levels, when the characters return, I start to remember them, remember the old stories, and wonder how their lives have changed.

The atmosphere of a cafe at night

In reality, when I experienced it, I didn’t think a game could make me slow down like that. The soft lofi music, the sound of rain outside the window, the warm yellow lighting – everything in Coffee Talk was so peaceful. I opened the game after a long day, and I suddenly noticed my breathing slowing down.

Sometimes I didn’t rush to continue the dialogue, just sat watching the characters sip their coffee, listening to the music, and thinking about the story they had just told. This feeling arose because the game didn’t pressure me to do anything quickly. There was no countdown timer, no pressure to win or lose. In later levels, I realized this even more clearly, because I wasn’t playing to beat the game, but to linger in that space a little longer.

Small choices

As I played longer, I began to realize that Coffee Talk wasn’t as gentle as it seemed. Besides making drinks, I also had to make very small choices in how to converse. Sometimes it was just choosing a short answer, or remaining silent instead of asking further questions.

In scenes occurring later in the story, I began to notice how the narrative could change direction because of a drink I made or a comment I made; I certainly started to realize how important those choices were. I related to it and felt integrated inside the content and not an outsider who was watching alone.
