Introduce about Nine Sols

Nine Sols is an indie-styled 2D action platformer that impresses with its ink painting art style. Its dark aura and use of Eastern mythology make for an immersive experience. The world was vibrant and boisterous but on the verge of collapse, with Sols powerful beings or forces representing civilizations capable of breaking it.

In Yi, the player plays the role of a lone warrior, who wakes after being in oblivion for a long time. The warrior has to set off on the journey of revenge, finding the truth and fighting evil. Nine Sols not only offers a fast-paced action experience with hard-hitting boss fights, but also aims to build depth through its story and emotions.

At times, the pace of the game gets heated as you fight every block and counter. It isn’t always like this though, as you’ll have your fair share of moments to explore the environment and examine the broken memories.

Slowly told story

The storyline of Nine Sols isn’t straightforward, nor does it explain everything clearly. When I first played, I was quite confused. Who are the characters? What happened to this world? Why is everything so ruined? But the game doesn’t rush to answer. Information comes from short dialogues, small details in the environment, sometimes just a vague statement. At first, it felt a bit hard to grasp, but after playing for a while, I started to understand why this storytelling style suited the game’s atmosphere so well.

There were moments after defeating a boss where I sat still for a few seconds, not because my hands were tired, but because the story had just opened up a different line of thought. Not a major twist, but a feeling of regret, conflict, and sometimes a little sadness. In reality, when experiencing it, Nine Sols’ storyline doesn’t try to emotionally impact the player with heavy words, but lets the emotions form naturally in the mind.

The combat system focuses on blocking and counter-attacking

Nine Sols has a combat style that, upon first encountering it, feels… a bit intense. It’s not the kind of chaotic slashing and dodging to get through the fight. Here, the game almost forces the player to learn how to block, time their moves, and counter-attack at the right moment. After playing for a while, I realized that the initial feeling of “difficulty” didn’t come from the enemies being too tough or dealing too much damage, but from not being used to the game’s rhythm.

A noticeable aspect is that the game strongly rewards patience. A well-timed parry feels incredibly satisfying, not noisy but enough to show you’ve just done the right thing. This feeling becomes even more pronounced in later levels, when enemies start using longer combo chains. There were times I lost several times in a row just because I tried to hit one more time, when pausing for half a second would have made all the difference.

World design and exploration guide

Nine Sols doesn’t present an overwhelmingly vast map right from the start. The game’s world unfolds gradually, with each area connected by rather hidden pathways, sometimes feeling a bit confusing for new players. But the deeper you go, the more you understand why the developers chose this approach.

Some fairly long sections exist, where there is no combat, just the character running through ruined landscapes. The illumination being dim, and the environment being a little touched with history.

Graphics and visual appeal after playing for a long time

One thing I noticed relatively late in playing Nine Sols was how the game uses visuals to maintain the player’s emotions. When you first start, everyone is easily drawn to the ink painting-style art mixed with sci-fi, which looks unique and different from most 2D games today. But if it were just “beautiful,” I probably wouldn’t have remembered it for so long. The great thing is that the graphics don’t stand alone, but closely follow the gameplay and the character’s mood.

After playing for a bit, I noticed how the colors in the game would get deluded. The light didn’t always leave this space, but as more and more was removed, there were empty frames. This creates a very strong sensation of loneliness. At some points in time, I’d stand there for a few seconds staring at the background and suddenly hesitate before pressing the play button again. The scene, as I said earlier, made me think of what the world has lost, even if the game didn’t specifically say it.

In general, Nine Sols doesn’t go out of its way to impress right from the get-go. The game progresses slowly and it is hard enough to compel players to rethink their approach. It tells its story without spell casting each and every detail for players to progress.
