The most noticeable thing about playing Samorost 2 is that the game isn’t complicated in terms of controls. I just need to tap on objects and creatures on the screen to see how they react. When I first started playing, I thought I’d get bored quickly because the mechanics were so simple. But after playing for a while, I found that very simplicity made me focus more on observation.

In fact, during gameplay, there were puzzles I solved just by noticing a very small detail, like which direction a creature was looking, or what rhythm a machine was moving in. This feeling arose because the game didn’t directly tell me what to do, but let me try and figure it out myself. Sometimes I pressed random buttons, thinking they were useless, but then unintentionally revealed the solution.

In fact, during gameplay, some creatures just stand there for fun, while others are the key to unlocking the next step. This feeling arises because the game makes it impossible to overlook any detail; everything can be related.

I like that even though the planet is small, it doesn’t feel empty. There’s always something to see, something to explore. For me, exploring these small but detailed worlds is a very enjoyable part of Samorost 2, because each level is like a small story waiting to be discovered.

When I first started playing, I found the game quite “gentle,” almost nothing to stress me out. But after playing for a while, I realized that’s precisely its strength. In reality, when playing, I usually open the game when I want to relax and not think too much. This feeling arises because of the slow pace, gentle sound, and soothing visuals. Each time I solve a puzzle, I don’t feel suspense, but rather relief, like I’ve just understood something simple.

Telling stories through images, without dialogue

Samorost 2 tells its story almost entirely through visuals. There are no characters that speak or long explanations. When I first began playing the game, I didn’t know what it was saying. After a period of play, I started to envision a narrative of my own through what I saw.

In fact, I can sense through reactions of creatures, changes in the environment, that something is definitely happening with the character on some kind of journey. This sensation comes about as the game provides a great deal of space for my fantasizing. Only I know how to interpret it, not by anybody else telling me how to.

For me, this wordless storytelling makes Samorost 2 very gentle yet profound. Each player may have a different feeling after finishing the game, and that’s what makes the game even more memorable.
